Different Genres of Poetry

Poetry is one of the oldest forms of writing used to evoke emotions among readers, talk about socio political cultural issues and to record the poet’s own life. Different kinds of literary terms like alliteration, personification, transferred epithet, onomatopoeia, simile help in making the poems richer and more artistic. Some different kinds of genre of poetry throughout decades are as follows:

Epic Poetry – This kind of poetry usually involves a lengthy narrative poem. It talks about the details of the past mentioning some heroic and extraordinary deeds of characters. Generally, the hero is a popular known figure in history. The plot spans over several years and decades. Although the texts are long, you will find them written in verse. Divine intervention is expected in these kinds of poems. ’The Illiad’ by Homer is a good example of epic poetry. 

Elegy Poetry – This genre of poetry reflects the theme of loss, grief and death. Subjects like sadness, compassion and redemption resonate with readers when they read the elegy. There are no set rules on metre and rhyming scheme.  

Dramatic Poetry – The most famous kind of poetry is dramatic monologue where the narrator is narrating the story in verses. It commonly uses the first person point of view. Since it is a monologue, usually the speaker narrates a long speech. Robert Browning’s ‘My Last Duchess’ is an example of a dramatic monologue. 

Satirical Poetry – This kind of poetry usually addresses human vices and absurdity by taking a humorous point of view. It sheds light upon the stupidity and sins happening in the society. The aim of such a poem is to be a cautionary tale for the readers or to inspire them to do better. As the name suggests, satirical poems are a way for readers to laugh at the foolishness of things or learn from them. 

Lyric Poetry – Such kinds of poems use different literary devices like metre and rhyme scheme to give the poems a song-like touch. These express the speaker’s personal feelings and emotions which readers also relate to. The feelings talked about in the poem are universal feelings for most of the part. It is a short poem. 

There are different genres of poetry which poets have used for a long time to express their thoughts and emotions.
