Idrees Babu is a scientist at the Department of Science and Technology in Lakshadweep, India, with over 20 years of experience in coral reef research. He is the first from the Lakshadweep archipelago to hold both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Aquaculture. Dr. Babu also qualified for a Lectureship in Fishery Science through the National Eligibility Test (NET), recognized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and earned his Ph.D. in Coral Reef Studies from Mahatma Gandhi University.
Dr. Babu's research spans various facets of marine science, including coral reef conservation, marine biodiversity assessment, shoreline management, and the development of restoration tools particularly focused on coral reefs and seagrass with community involvement. His interest in understanding the complex natural processes influencing primary productivity and oceanic phenomena around the Lakshadweep Archipelago led to the assessment of the implications of climate change on these delicate systems. His role is pivotal in formulating integrated island management and marine spatial plans for Lakshadweep, showcasing his commitment to the region's sustainable development.
