Lakshadweep Islands: Introduction to Biodiversity and Environment Education

Elsie Gabriel is a global climate advocate, author, and plenary speaker at UNOC 2022. She is also the founder of the Young Environmentalists Programme and Oceans School India and serves as National Coordinator for Oceans–Climate Reality Project India Asia and Consultant for Lakshadweep’s Islands Climate Action Plan. A certified PADI and HSA diver, Elsie empowers youth, women, and indigenous communities through ocean education, bridging science, culture, and traditional knowledge toward the Ocean Decade 2030 goals.

Idrees Babu is a scientist at the Department of Science and Technology in Lakshadweep, India, with over 20 years of experience in coral reef research. He is the first from the Lakshadweep archipelago to hold both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Aquaculture. Dr. Babu's research spans various facets of marine science, including coral reef conservation, marine biodiversity assessment, shoreline management, and the development of restoration tools particularly focused on coral reefs and seagrass with community involvement. His role is pivotal in formulating integrated island management and marine spatial plans for Lakshadweep, showcasing his commitment to the region's sustainable development.
