This book explains the scientific names of 1413 species of birds occurring, or known to occur, in the Indian Subcontinent from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

The species listing is following Praveen et al. (2021). The checklist provided in this book is based on the best present knowledge on bird diversity as of 31 December 2021. Any omissions are purely unintentional.

This book consists of 4 chapters – (1) Chapter 1 deals with the birds of the Indian Subcontinent, (2) Chapter 2 deals with the understanding of scientific names, (3) Chapter 3 provides the explanation of generic and specific names, and (4) Chapter 4 is a dictionary of names in alphabetical order for easy tracking by the reader. A detailed list of 436 published references dealing with published species descriptions and new sighting records is also provided as a bibliography.

Each binomial name of bird species dealt with in Chapter 3 of this book is followed by the name of the authority and year of description, protonym and its publication details, accepted English name, explanation of the generic name, followed by an explanation of the specific name, general country-level distribution information, and other English name/s.
