Literature is the one of the forms of expressing the philosophical view, existentialism. It is said that all communication is persuasive in the sense of endeavouring for some sort of aesthetic, emotional and cognitive effects for their envisaged audience. There are different faiths and ideologies which have their own ways. Indian and Western philosophies help distilling variety of views – the principles relating to the inevitability of the consequences of man’s action, the interconnectedness of all things, the linkage in past, present and future, the integrity of the human family, and the harmony existing between man and his surroundings. Existentialism seems to be new with the advent of modernism but it has its roots since time immemorial. With the evolution of man’s knowledge, he understands the principles of existentialism for his survival. That day onwards it has been a debate for the authors and writers to incorporate various survival strategies in their books. Therefore, it could be stated that this book is a unique venture in analyzing the novels of Chita Banerjee Divakaruni from existentialists’ view. The novels namely The Mistress of Spices, Sister of My Heart, The Vine of Desires, Neela: Victory Song, and Oleander Girl of Divakaruni are selected for the study.
