The book “Mammals of Ladakh” is a photographic collection of mammal species inhabiting the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh. This compilation is contributed by 27 amateur photographers from different walks of life and Spituk Monastery. Few details of each animal are provided for field identification along with conservation status. This book features some of the rarely seen animals in Ladakh landscape. Viz., Eurasian Otter, Tibetan Wild Dog, and Tibetan Sand Fox. Another highlight is first time report of Golden Jackal and reappearance of Musk Deer (after > 60 years). This book is joint collaboration of G.B Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (an Autonomous Institute of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Gov. of India), WCBCL (Wildlife Conservation & Birds Club of Ladakh), and other wildlife photographers than these organizations. It also draws significance of animals in the society from early historical motifs, petroglyphs and religious thangka paintings. Few practices and anecdote are also covered in the book. Some of the clicks are product of patience and hard work in tough landscape of Ladakh. It highlights threats and conservation status of the mammals of cold desert landscape and need for conservation efforts.
